Itinerary – Gotthard Panorama Express
Arrive in Switzerland; onward rail transfer to Lugano. This charming city lies in the bay of a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains. The town piazzas, and blooming flowers in the lakeside Belvedere Gardens invite you to relax and unwind. Overnight in Lugano.
Lugano is all about its Mediterranean climate and food. Take the boat (supplement payable locally) across the lake to one of the beautiful rustic grottos along the lake shore. Most are situated above the lake surrounded by lush forests, serving rustic Swiss-Italian food. Take a stroll to the Customs Museum and place one foot on Italian soil before taking the next boat across to the picturesque fishing village of Gandria. Explore the winding, cobbled streets before returning by boat to Lugano. Overnight in Lugano.
Breakfast at your hotel. Travel along the old Gotthard Route from the Mediterranean south to the traditional heart of Switzerland, finishing with a lake cruise across Lake Lucerne. From Lugano by train via Bellinzona and on through the 15km long ‘old’ Gotthard tunnel and then down to Flüelen. End your journey with a leisurely cruise on board one of Lake Lucerne’s vintage paddle steamers for a panoramic 2½h cruise. Take in the amazing scenery all around you, from the imposing mountain peaks to the forest covered shores, all reflected in the crystal clear water. Overnight in Lucerne.
Lucerne is one of the top destinations in Switzerland offering a picturesque old town with painted facades, a beautiful lakeside setting for leisurely strolly and there’s plenty of cultural activities such as the outstanding art collections. Included in an excursion to Mount Rigi – the Queen on Mountains – travel by lake cruise to Vitznau and take the cogwheel train up Mount Rigi. Enjoy th views from the summit. Return via Arth Goldau. Overnight in Lucerne.
Before you depart Lucerne, be sure to take a final walk around its attractions including its fully restored Chapel Bridge, its souvenirs and watch shops, all the while soaking up the beautiful lakeside setting. Departure by rail transfer to airport or Swiss/Italian border.
