STAGE 5: LUGANO – ZERMATT (215km)
You must visit Monte Brè, Lugano’s house mountain for spectacular views before continuing to Ascona. Famous for its mild Mediterranean climate, the Old Town and lakeside promenade make for a beautiful spot to watch the world go by. You can also stop off in Bellinzona; its three castles have been designated UNESCO World Heritage.
Depart sunny Ticino, heading north to cross the famous St. Gotthard Pass and Furka Pass and continue into the Valais region.
Continue moving down to Täsch, where you park your car before taking the train on to the car-free resort of Zermatt.
Overnight in Romantik Hotel Julen, Zermatt (or similar 4*).
STAGE 6: ZERMATT – LAUSANNE (180km)
Take time this morning to wander through the old town of Zermatt and the many souvenir shops. We would highly recommend a ride on the open air Gornergrat railway for unrivalled views over the 4,000m peaks surrounding Zermatt (supplement applies).
After making your way back down to Täsch to collect your car, your route begins with a stunning drive up through the Valais, the French speaking part of Switzerland, heading through Sierre and Sion. After travelling through Martigny, reach the shores of Lake Geneva and continue to Montreux. This area is known as the Swiss Riviera. Be sure to visit romantic Chillon Castle, the most visited historic building in Switzerland. For nearly four centuries Chillon was the residence and profitable toll station of the Counts of Savoy. After visiting the castle continue to the surrounding terraced vineyards of the Lavaux and further to Lausanne, the second-largest city on Lake Geneva. Sports and culture are given a high profile in the Olympic capital. Make sure you visit the Olympic Museum.
Overnight in Hotel Alpha-Palmiers by Fassbind, Lausanne (or similar 4*).
